Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation sounds like a dream come true for many children and parents. A child simply takes a pill or drinks a little bit of medicine, and it will make their dental nerves quickly drift away. Your child will remain awake throughout their appointment and still be able to respond to commands, but they will be drowsy. Time will fly by for them, and the visit will seem like it went by so fast that it’s almost like it didn’t happen!
IV Sedation
IV sedation is a potent option in which the sedative is administered directly into the bloodstream via an injection in the hand or arm. It relaxes a child extremely quickly, and better yet, we can adjust their sedation level in real time as needed. This is typically only recommended for children with extreme dental anxiety or those who need to undergo a more complex procedure.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Better known as laughing gas, a child simply breathes in nitrous oxide through a small nasal mask, and this will make them feel warm, happy, and floaty. The mask stays on throughout the appointment, and once it comes off, your child should feel normal in about five minutes, meaning they can get straight back to school and resume their routine without any lingering effects.
General Anesthesiology
General anesthesiology allows a child to literally sleep through their appointment, and this is primarily used for children with special needs or those who require complex care. Dr. Blackwelder has hospital privileges at Hillcrest Hospital and the Fish Pond Surgery Center, so children needing this service will be overseen by a licensed anesthesiologist to ensure their safety.
